with a history of uveitis and/or glaucoma. Surgery is performed in the
Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI) Surgicenter as an outpatient.
B.Glaucoma
Glaucoma laser surgery, trabeculectomy filtering surgery and valve-tube
surgery, performed on an ambulatory outpatient basis at MEEI.
C. Corneal Surgery
Corneal transplantation, limbal stem cell transplantation for ocular
surface reconstruction, amniotic membrane grafting, keratoprosthesis,
and anterior segment reconstruction are all performed on an ambulatory
outpatient
basis
D. Vitreo-retinal Surgery
Diagnostic and therapeutic pars plana vitrectomy for patients with
posterior uveitis and for patients with diabetic retinopathy with
vitreous hemorrhage, with endolaser photocoagulation, is performed,
generally, under local anesthesia on an ambulatory outpatient basis.
If scleral buckling or other retinal procedures are required as a
consequence of the complexity of the case, admission to MEEI as an
inpatient is sometimes advisable.
E. Minor surgical procedures at MERSI
The minor operating room at MERSI is the setting for procedures such
as intravitreal injections (steroid, antibiotic, antiviral, antiangiogenic),
lid and conjunctival biopsies, removal of surface lesions, and application
of tissue adhesive to ulcerating corneas.
